Entrepreneurs Are Not Lucky

Last week I was talking with someone and made a comment along these lines:

“I’ve been really lucky with Doba and the success I’ve had as an entrepreneur.”

He immediately said to not take offense, but that it bugs him when successful people say they’re “lucky”, because I tried when other people sat at home and didn’t do anything. He had done the same thing for his successful website development and design business: he went out and made it happen. In his mid-sized town, about 50% of the people he knows always talk about starting a business, but never do.

I think 50% is about ballpark for people I know too. Maybe it’s the debt, the

Curveballs (or boulders as they may be)

Curveballs (or boulders as they may be)

Sometimes in life, in businesses, and especially in entrepreneurship, you get hit with something unexpected. Plans and decisions have been made. Actions taken and implemented. Momentum is moving you and your life and the things within your control towards a specific objective. An objective that you’re trying to reach. But then the curveball comes. A curveball that is outside of your control. And all bets are off.

Well, on Saturday June 13th, I was thrown an EPIC curveball.

But before I get to that, let me tell you about my Momentum. A group of us–me, Dallen, Liz, Michelle, Taylor, Tyler, Ruth–planned to climb Mt. Rainier from June 25-June 29. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do. It’s not an easy task,

Experience is Overrated

Sunday, I took Kaitlin up American Fork canyon for our first hike this year. We hiked the Pine Hollow Trail to the junction of the Salamander Flat Trail and back. Besides the fact that she did the 3 mile round trip and 750 elevation gain hike (25% which was on snow) all by herself (making me very excited for the increase in distance we can cover this year on our Adventure Buddy trips), I learned an important lesson, and it’s something that applies 110% to entrepreneurship.

On the way down the trail, there was a little bush that had very noticeable water droplets on the leafs, left there by the skiff of a thunderstorm that came through while we were hiking.

LaunchUp.org

LaunchUp.org is a project I kicked off a couple months back. Best way I can describe it is like barn raising for entrepreneurs, like a community based advisory board. We’ll do monthly events, and maybe an all-day affair in the fall.

I want to work with the existing ecosystem of entrepreneurial support groups and organizations. And we’ll see how it evolves over time. If you have ideas, let me know.

Here’s what I posted on What is LaunchUp.org?

Basically the idea behind LaunchUp.org is the 2009 version of a good old fashioned barn raising applied to technology entrepreneurship.

This is something I’ve been thinking of and stewing on for a long

JeremyHanks.com 2.0

Jan 22 2009

Well, since it’s been so fashionable over the last while to talk about Web 2.0, I figured I better come around and design and launch JeremyHanks.com 2.0.

Wade at Anavi Design is doing a completely new design for me, (and it’s going to completely and utterly rock!) and we’re upgrading to WordPress 2.7 while we’re doing it.We’re shooting for changes this week, soooo, if you come and things look jacked up, that’s intentional.

Follow me on Twitter @jeremyhanks and subscribe to my RSS feed or email notifications so you can see the goods when everything is updated.
