Social Media Shift

What is social media?
Well, first of all, media is a medium to share information; to share stories if you will. In the early years of human history, the media was the spoken word. That’s how stories were shared.

Fast forward to 2009, and the media has changed. Text, photos, audio, video. Drastically changed by significant technology innovations over hundreds of years, with that pace of change accelerating and accelerating in the last 20 years. The other component is the social one. Again, because of technology, and mostly because of the connecting nature of the worldwide network we call the Internet, people can now use these changed mediums to communicate and share in ways previously not possible. To be honest, I don’t get it sometimes, the change is literally mind-boggling. Technology is changing the world faster than most of us can keep up. But that’s not the point. I have no doubt the way that we as humans communicate, associate, relate, and I’m sure about 10 more ‘ate’ words is undergoing a fundamental shift.

Why did I start blogging 2.5 yrs ago? (www.jeremyhanks.com) Why did I finally join Facebook 1.5 yrs ago? (www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=718624160) Why have I participated with LinkedIn and tried to maintain a new type of business network? (www.linkedin.com/in/jeremyhanks) Why did I join Twitter 2 months ago (@jeremyhanks)?I think it’s all my way of trying to keep up.

Charity Tweetup at Sundance
And in the spirit of trying to keep up, I decided to have Doba help sponsor a tweetup for charity this Thursday night January 22 at Park City Mountain Resort.(What’s a tweetup? Well, people on Twitter spew forth info all day long and talk to and amongst their followers. Sometimes, they still actually want to get together face-to-face, imagine that!)Suntweet 2009Social Hat and Startup Princess put the event together. Here are the details. The money you bring ($5 Minimum) will go to a charity that will be selected by social survey during the event. It’s going to be fun, you’ll meet great people, you’ll help out a good cause, and maybe we can all try to keep up with these changes together.
