Discussions and clarifications

May 21 2007

I’m convinced that high schools/colleges should teach a class called: “Phone calls 101″.

So much can be figured out in a 10 minute phone call, and so many of us won’t do it. I’ve said it before.

And a couple weeks back, I had a phone conversation related to a post I did about Utah Entrepreneurs and Utah Investors.

John Richards and I connected via email after I posted concerning his article
Utah entrepreneurs face venture hurdle
that ran in the Salt Lake based paper the Deseret News. After an email or two, John called me up on my cell phone to talk through the points he was trying to make in that article. I can say this: after that phone call, I had a completely different take on what he was trying to say. (The article headline was one thing that threw me, and John told me the newspaper editor made it up without running it by him)

This past weekend, John authored another article in the Deseret News called
Column was pro-entrepreneur
. Rather than me trying to explain my new understanding of John’s point of view after our phone call, you should read the new article. It’s complete with a small visual that helps explain his thoughts and really clarifies everything.

Moral of the story? Discussions and clarifications are good. And you’ll get more discussing and clarifying done on the phone or in person.

PS – I’m not the CEO he talks about emailing back and forth with in the article. Sounds like that was an interesting exchange.

Doggone journalists! I was once misquoted in the Deseret News comparing poker to churchball. Some people got the idea that I felt playing poker was no worse than playing churchball… which is not the case.

I have yet to receive a threat on my life or a non-call on a foul reported to the General Authorities in a poker game ;)
