Crunch Time, Baby!

Friday, 2 June 2006

Right now, at this very moment and for the next three weeks or so, it’s crunch time. As a husband, father, CEO, employer, mentor, and entrepreneur, everything’s happening all at once. If I’m not really careful, I could blow it.

The last couple of weeks at Doba have been crazy. We’ve done some major restructuring, and as I’ve previously mentioned, Doba is one of the main exhibitors at eBay Live in Las Vegas (June 12-15). During eBay Live! I’ll be speaking on four different panels, sitting for three book signings, presenting at the Doba booth numerous times, all the while trying to fit in meetings with key partners and eBay staffers. My daughter turned two just over two months ago, and she just decided it was now time to get a bit rowdy. Oh, and did I mention that my wife is eight-and-a-half months pregnant with our second child!

As you might suspect, I’m struggling to stay on top of all of my responsibilities. I know my family is taking the brunt of my struggles right now, and I need to do a way better job at home. The bottom line though is this: It’s crunch time, baby, and I’ve gotta rise to the occasion at each and every level. It’s the NBA Finals, The World Series, and a Presidential election all rolled up into one. Think game five of the 1997 NBA Finals when Michael Jordan—perhaps the greatest athlete who ever lived—and the star player for the Chicago Bulls, was sick and weakened by a stomach virus, but still somehow managed to score 38 points on the Utah Jazz, eventually leading the Bulls to their fifth NBA title in seven years.

Question is, am I a Michael Jordan? Can I elevate my game? Well, I’m going to sure try.

To all of the Doba staffers who read this blog and are under lots of tight deadlines and pressure right now, and to all of you other entrepreneurs out there, let’s all get busy and push through whatever crunch time your facing, both now and in the future. In doing so, go the extra mile to ensure that you do that for all areas of your responsibility.

When Michael Jordan decided to own the game of basketball, he didn’t just dunk the ball or score. All aspects of his play reached new levels (he even once won the NBA’s Defensive Player of the Year Award, which is pretty amazing feat for a scoring machine to do). And really, that what we all have to do, because whether it’s Murphy’s Law or just bad timing, sometimes it all hits the fan at once.

So here’s to crunch time; with all of its pressures and challenges, it also provides plenty of opportunities to shine. I for one say, bring it on, especially the Baby part!!!
